## Deployment Guide ##
## Deployment Guide
*Note that Shipyard is still under active development and this guide will evolve along the way*
The current deployment makes use of OpenStack-Helm to set up the underlaying Kubernetes
infrastructure and helm charts to deploy the containerized applications.
The current deployment makes use of the [ucp-integration](https://github.com/att-comdev/ucp-integration)
repository to set up the underlaying Kubernetes infrastructure, Ceph and UCP components. This
approach sets up an 'All-In-One' UCP environment that allows developers to bring up Shipyard
and the rest of the UCP components on a single Ubuntu 16.04 Virtual Machine.
*Note that the minimum recommended size of the VM is 4 vCPUs, 16GB of RAM with 64GB disk space*
1) Follow the steps in the OpenStack-Helm All-In-One [guide](http://openstack-helm.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install/all-in-one.html)
to set up the environment on an Ubuntu 16.04 Virtual Machine. Follow the steps from the start of the
wiki till the 'Deploy' section to get the base system up.
### Pre-Deployment Preparations
*Note that we do not need to install the OpenStack Helm Charts for Shipyard to function*
1) Set up `etc/hosts` on a freshly installed Ubuntu 16.04 Virtual Machine
The environment should resemble the following after the executing the required steps in the guide:
```
HOST_IFACE=$(ip route | grep "^default" | head -1 | awk '{ print $5 }')
LOCAL_IP=$(ip addr | awk "/inet/ && /${HOST_IFACE}/{sub(/\/.*$/,\"\",\$2); print \$2}")
cat << EOF | sudo tee -a /etc/hosts
${LOCAL_IP} $(hostname)
EOF
```
2) Clone the [ucp-integration](https://github.com/att-comdev/ucp-integration) repository. Update
the hostname in the `deploy_ucp.sh` script
```
# kubectl get pods --all-namespaces
NAMESPACE NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE
default nfs-provisioner-3807301966-b7sh4 1/1 Running 0 22h
kube-system calico-etcd-p4fct 1/1 Running 0 22h
kube-system calico-node-35pbq 2/2 Running 0 22h
kube-system kube-dns-692378583-h9cq2 3/3 Running 0 22h
kube-system tiller-deploy-1332173772-fplsk 1/1 Running 0 22h
```
2) Deploy Airflow Helm Chart
Note: The airflow chart requires a postgresql instance and rabbitmq to be running
Create shipyard namespace:
```
kubectl create namespace shipyard
git clone https://github.com/att-comdev/ucp-integration.git
sed -i -e s/node1/$(hostname)/g /home/ubuntu/ucp-integration/manifests/basic_ucp/deploy_ucp.sh
```
Postgresql Helm Chart Installation:
### Production Deployment
Clone the [OpenStack-Helm-Addons](https://github.com/att-comdev/openstack-helm-addons.git) repository to
get the postgresql helm chart. Bring up the postgresql container using the postgresql helm chart:
We will use this approach if we are not making any changes to Shipyard and would like to bring up
the UCP environment as it is
1) Switch to root user after performing the steps in the *Pre-Deployment Preparations* section.
```
helm install --name=shipyard-postgresql postgresql/ --namespace=shipyard
sudo -i
cd /home/ubuntu/ucp-integration/manifests/basic_ucp/
```
Note: Postgresql may take a short time to reach the 'Running' state. Verify that postgresql is running:
2) Export the variables that are unique to the environment. For instance, we can do the following
to update the environment variables for a VM that is assigned an IP of *30.30.30.4* on interface
*ens3* (network *30.30.30.0/24*):
```
# kubectl get pods -n shipyard
NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE
postgresql-0 1/1 Running 0 1m
export CEPH_CLUSTER_NET=30.30.30.0/24
export CEPH_PUBLIC_NET=30.30.30.0/24
export GENESIS_NODE_IP=30.30.30.4
export NODE_NET_IFACE=ens3
```
3) Start the UCP deployment
```
./deploy_ucp.sh
```
Rabbitmq Helm Chart Installation:
### Dev Environment Deployment
Go to the openstack-helm directory that was created in Step 1
We will use this approach if we want to bring up a dev environment that allows us to test our own
dags and operators in Airflow. Changes to Shipyard API/CLI will require a rebuild of the Shipyard
images with the updates. We will need to reference to the custom image in our environment variables
so that it does not point to the image in the Master branch.
Update the values.yaml of the rabbitmq charts to reflect the appropriate username and password for the
environment, e.g. *airflow / airflow*
Execute the following commands:
1) Create the following directories on the target host machine:
```
helm install --name=shipyard-etcd-rabbitmq etcd/ --namespace=shipyard
helm install --name=shipyard-rabbitmq rabbitmq/ --namespace=shipyard
mkdir -p /home/ubuntu/workbench/dags
mkdir -p /home/ubuntu/workbench/plugins
mkdir -p /home/ubuntu/workbench/logs
```
Note: We need to make sure that the etcd chart is executed before the rabbitmq chart due to dependencies
```
# kubectl get pods -n shipyard
NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE
etcd-2810752095-054xb 1/1 Running 0 2m
postgresql-0 1/1 Running 0 3m
rabbitmq-646028817-0bwgp 1/1 Running 0 1m
rabbitmq-646028817-3hb1z 1/1 Running 0 1m
rabbitmq-646028817-sq6cw 1/1 Running 0 1m
```
Airflow Helm Chart Installation:
Create the following directories on the target host machine:
```
$ mkdir -p /home/ubuntu/workbench/dags
$ mkdir -p /home/ubuntu/workbench/plugins
$ mkdir -p /home/ubuntu/workbench/logs
```
Copy the [rest_api_plugin](https://github.com/att-comdev/shipyard/blob/master/shipyard_airflow/plugins/rest_api_plugin.py)
into the newly created plugins directory, i.e. `/home/ubuntu/workbench/plugins` so that it can be loaded by Airflow during
startup. Note that other custom operators can also be added to the directory as required.
2) Copy the [rest_api_plugin](https://github.com/att-comdev/shipyard/blob/master/shipyard_airflow/plugins/rest_api_plugin.py)
into the newly created plugins directory, i.e. `/home/ubuntu/workbench/plugins` so that it can
be loaded by Airflow during startup. Note that other custom operators can also be added to the
directory as required.
Note: Custom dags should be added into the newly created dags directory, i.e. `/home/ubuntu/workbench/dags`
Next, proceed to clone the [AIC-Helm](https://github.com/att-comdev/aic-helm.git) repository to get the Airflow Helm Charts.
The charts can be found under the airflow directory.
3) Update `armada.yaml.sub` to override the settings for Shipyard
```
helm install --name=airflow airflow/ --namespace=shipyard
sed -i -e 's/prod_environment: true/prod_environment: false/g' /home/ubuntu/ucp-integration/manifests/basic_ucp/armada.yaml.sub
```
Verify that the airflow helm charts were successful deployed:
4) Switch to root user after performing Step 1 to 3
```
# kubectl get pods -n shipyard
NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE
etcd-2810752095-054xb 1/1 Running 0 1h
flower-57424757-xqzls 1/1 Running 0 1m
postgresql-0 1/1 Running 0 1h
rabbitmq-646028817-0bwgp 1/1 Running 0 1h
rabbitmq-646028817-3hb1z 1/1 Running 0 1h
rabbitmq-646028817-sq6cw 1/1 Running 0 1h
scheduler-1793121224-z57t9 1/1 Running 0 1m
web-1556478053-t06t9 1/1 Running 0 1m
worker-3775326852-0747g 1/1 Running 0 1m
sudo -i
cd /home/ubuntu/ucp-integration/manifests/basic_ucp/
```
5) Export the variables that are unique to the environment. For instance, we can do the below
to update the environment variables for a VM that is assigned an IP of *30.30.30.4* on interface
*ens3* (network *30.30.30.0/24*).
Update image references in the environment variables if we want to test a new Shipyard and/or Airflow
image, e.g. image v0.1.0 as a result of code changes.
```
export CEPH_CLUSTER_NET=30.30.30.0/24
export CEPH_PUBLIC_NET=30.30.30.0/24
export GENESIS_NODE_IP=30.30.30.4
export NODE_NET_IFACE=ens3
export SHIPYARD_IMAGE="attcomdev/shipyard:v0.1.0"
export AIRFLOW_IMAGE="attcomdev/airflow:v0.1.0"
```
6) Start the UCP deployment
```
./deploy_ucp.sh
```
To check that all resources are working as intended:
### Post Deployment
1) The deployment is fully automated and can take a while to complete (it can take 30 minutes to an
hour for a full deployment to complete)
2) The environment should resemble the following after executing the required steps:
```
$ kubectl get all --namespace=shipyard
