Fix pep8 errors found by hacking 2.0.0

The new hacking release found some pep8 errors, fix them.
Unfortunately, moving to 2.0.0 pulled a thread with other
dependencies causing issues, so for now pin it below
1.2.0 to get the gate functioning again.
