Brian Haley 10ff1caaca Fix some new pylint "C" warnings

After updating pylint, it started emitting additional "C"
warnings in some cases, fix some of them.

  use-implicit-booleaness-not-comparison,
  use-maxsplit-arg,
  unnecessary-dunder-call
